Without doubt, Jools Holland. The way he plays boogie-woogie, big band stuff, accompanies his guests on 'Later with...' - he's just the best of the five. Check out the piano solo on The The's - Uncertain Smile (Soul Mining LP, 1983). That's when I first heard of him (I didn't know about Squeeze at the time) and have admired him since.
Would have to say though, that I love Pet Shop Boys, and the arrangements on their records are brilliant. Chris Lowe, I think, is very under-rated as a songwriter and musician. They don't exude this Me Me Me attitude that so many of todays 'talents' do, and I find that refreshing. He does a lot more in the studio than many people give him credit for.
Having said that, I've not heard Chris Lowe play the piano like Jools Holland, and I suspect that in a competition Jools would most probably win.
Chris Martin and David Gray just play basic chords, so I don't rate them very highly, and although I love Elton too, and admire him as a musician/songwriter, Jools wins it for me.
