I am trying to fill out my library a little more. I have become familiar with all the "major acts" in the progressive rock/ prog-metal genre, but I wonder if there are any really good ones I am missing.

These are the ones I have discovered:

Tool
Mudvayne
Mastodon
Symphony x
Dream Theater

(I have all the stuff from the 70s: yes, king crimson, etc etc etc, so don't go there. Just the more recent stuff is what I need to expand my collection, thanks)

Not sure if you are looking for prog metal or both progressive rock and prog-metal. Here is a listing of some major and not so major but damn good bands in these genres. In parenths are my recommended albums for each band. Some great ear candy here...enjoy!

Prog-metal
*Pain of Salvation (Perfect Element Part 1)
*Ayreon (Human Equation)
*Opeth (Still Life or Ghost Stories)
*Riverside (Second Life Syndrome)
*Liquid Tension Experiment (Liquid Tension Experiment 2)
*Psychotic Waltz (Into the Everflow)
*Anathema (Judgement)
*Shadow Gallery (Room V)

Prog-rock (great more recent bands - not metal)
*The Tangent - (The World That We Drive Through)
*The Flowerking's (Paradox Hotel or Stardust We Are)
*Arena (Contagion or The Visitor (which is Pink Floydish))
*Frost (Milliontown)
*Echolyn (The End is Beautiful)
*Sylvan (Posthumous Silence)
*Sieges Even (Art of Navigating by the Stars)
*Magenta (Seven)

search Amazon or the web for reviews and sound samples.

If you are looking for prog rock and metal, then I suggest you go a little bit (or a lot?) back in time and listen to: Watchtower, Sieges Even, Fates Warning, Van Der Graf Generator, Faust, Kinetic Dissent, Voivod, early Rush, late Heir Apparent, Gong. I know that all these bands come from early 70's - late 90's, but I believe that the essence of what you're looking for is there. Tool is a great band, but I don't think that the prog rock / metal title goes for them. The same with Mudvayne. Hope you'll find some masterpieces in the list above. Good luck.
