Afterschool programs can be very good or really lame. Some of the positive effects of afterschool programs are building friendships that may not otherwise have a chance to happen or the opportunity to learn something new and exciting be it a sport, artistic outlet, or an academic subject. It may even be as simple as a way for a family to avoid there child being a latchkey kid.

I have taught in afterschool programs when my son was elementary school age and it was a positive experience for me as well as the kids.

I disagree completely with your first answerer. A quality after school program continues the learning process of the child's day. A child can have many positive reinforcements to the desirability of education, working alone or in a group, and the benefits of education over mindless recreation.

The key is "quality". If all you want is a childcare service, that's all you'll get.

But even basic childcare is changing. Oklahoma is becoming a leader by requiring daycare workers to train in childcare techniques and requiring educational elements to daycare centers in order to have a license.

If your state doesn't work to these high standards behaps it's time they did.
