You may have claims against the home and your Ex for any work or money you invested. A verbal agreement is just as powerful as a written legal contract it's just harder to prove. You may be able to recoup up to $5,000 through small claims court (under $100 to file). If you invested manpower hours you can still claim an equitable about for your labor as well. Once you win the claim against your Ex you can place a lein on the house and it will earn 10% interest per year until it is sold. Once it is finally sold you get paid before anyone else gets any money.

You need to call the County Clerk and they will direct you to the precinct where the offense took place. They in turn will send you a form to fill out stating the details. After you send it back to the small claims court with a check (maybe around $60) they will set a date to appear. Make sure you have all your records handy to prove how much money & work you put into the house. Within 3 months they should be calling you to court. It's not necessary to hire a lawyer but you can if you want. There is a maximum amount you can sue for in small claims court so you may decide it is not worth it to hire an attorney.
