I work with Mentally Retarted adults, and appaently the doctor said if we give any of them Robutissin to give them a full glass of water afterwards. Isn't cough syrup supposed to coat your throat? So doesn't drinking water afterwards defeat that purpose?

Robitussin's active ingredient is guafenisen, a mucolytic - it breaks up mucus. It works better with more fluids, especially water. Therefore, since cough medicine is not designed to coat the throat to work, it makes sense to give water with the robitussin so it'll work better.

I didn't think cough syrup's purpose is to coat the throat but quiten the cough. A glass of water after can have many reasons behind it. The first one I can think of is helping to rid the taste of the syrup and another to help the syrup down the throat.

Maybe some of the patients spit it up and drinking the water makes sure it gets into their systems?

Yes, it would be a good idea to wait to drink....but not harmful. The medication still gets into your blood stream.

It kills the nasty taste...I always give my kids a glass of water after giving them cough medicine.

I agree but that type of medicine tastes horrible. I drink water with medicine and if I couldn't, I don't think I would take the medicine.

Maybe, but it tastes nasty, and the water will help wash it out of your mouth.
