The Transistor.

The transistor is what allowed computers to be reduced in size from the Vacuum tube monstrosities of the fifties and really facilitated the growth of the computer as a tool. Transistors are the basic building block of all modern day electronics, from the simplest garage door remote to the radio to the supercomputer. As the transistor has been able to be reduced insize, to the point now that millions and millions of them can be placed on a single small piece of silicon.

The first was movable type because that enabled books to be printed and information shared. The next was the PC and Internet because that acted the same as movable type but information now moves extremely fast.

Where would we be without the old standbys: the wheel and fire.

But, I think the answer would be the personal computer.
