Maybe it was maybe it wasnt. One person here says dirt comes up black thats true evcept the dirt at Comerica is clay which is red add rosin to the it would look mor pink. I have had pine tar on me many times in my life and well it never stains as it looked when washed of Kenny's hand however Clay will stain a little. Even if it was then please explain how he got better after it was removed. With the so called tar he gave up a walk and a hit in the 1st inning after the so called pine tar was removed he never gave up another hit til the 8th. Look Kenny is having a fabulous post season and sone fans and anmouncers just cant handle or explain that. Kenny will again pitch in game 6 and again have another great game and will break the post season scorless inning record which is 27 he now has 23 scorless innings this post season.

It does not Matter if it helped him or not...the rules actually say if he had ANYTHING foreign on his hand, he should have been ejected from the game, and then suspended for minimum 2-3 games. He should not pitch again in the world series.. the people in St. Louis should be loosing their freegin minds right now.. and Tony Larussa not making a big deal out of it because his friend Jim Leyland was in the other dugout is not right. Rogers should not pitch again... And its not like they dont have proof.. ESPN has video of Rogers with the same patch of brown "Dirt" lol on his palm/hand in the Yankee series, and the A's series as well as this Cardinals series.. he got caught LOL. and MLB should Suspend him, they suspended Jay Howell for the Same Freegin thing in the playoffs that year.. rogers should not pitch again

Few quick things:
1: Dirt doesn't always turn up black on your hands, maybe you haven't been to a baseball diamond in person but have you noticed the dirt used on the mound?
2: To the guy making complaints about him being 50 and striking out so many people...pitching isn't always about throwing a 100mph pitch. Sure that helps but also having an arsenal of different pitches is what really gets strikes. Yes, yes you're not a cards fan but judging from your name you're a Yankees fan and to me it sounds like you're a little bitter over your team biting the dust yet again.
There is no proof of it being pine tar, and there is no proof of it being just regular dirt from the field. Everyone needs to stop asking this question and just let the officials handle it, had LaRussa asked for the officials to check Rogers, then we would know for sure what happened, but he didn't. And even after he washed it off, Rogers still played flawlessly.

Yes it was pine tar, but the bottom line is the Cardinals didn't challenge it and it was removed after the 1st inning and the Cards still couldn't hit him. If I'm LaRussa I have the umps check him to find out for sure whether it was or it wasn't. At the very least he could have broken some of Roger's concentration. BTW I'm not a Tiger or Cardinal fan.

Yes. And i hate how Detroit fans are saying he wasn't and if he was they would have kicked him out of the game....BS. if he didn't have anythin illegal on his hand then tell me why did he clean it or wash it before the next inning? And why would he grab his cap over and over from the back and front of it. How does he strike out so many people now, when he hes like 50 and hes not even a power pitcher?
^^^^
He is actually in his forties and his recent pitching in the post season has been matching some of his earlier pitching in his years in the MLB. I do not think it was dirt though. Yet, nonetheless, he was not thrown out or banned from any games so the game goes on whether or not people have a say about it. If nobody wants to take care about Bonds what makes ya think they'll do anything about Rogers?

well, we can only specualte now, but it doesnt look good, it did not look like dirt at all, and was shiny. His entire body was full of it. Before every pitch he would touch the front of his cap, and the back of his cap, and touch each of his fingers on his palm. People say it is not much of a big deal, and mabey so, but it gave him an unfair advantage. I didnt see jeff weaver using pine tar.
By the way for people who dont know what pine tar does. Its brown sticky substance that allows pitchers to grip the ball better on cold days, it is illegal in the MLB

He should have been rocked by Puljos with a home run in the 6th inning i believe(not sure what inning it was when he hit that hard ball to left Field). But what can i do right? just watch the cheaters get away with things like this because they can.
Ohh and im not a Cards fan so dont think im mad cuz im pulling for them. It gets me mad when you got alot of players playing the right way, practicing for hours to be the best. And you got these chums using illegal things to make it easier for them to succeed or make a name for them when they dont deserve it.

I'm not sure what it was, but I'm pretty sure it didn't get there by accident.
He cheated. And they can argue that he didn't pitch any different after the incident, but the fact is there shouldn't have been an "after". He should have been thrown out of the game and kept out for the rest of the series.

Dirt on the hand comes up black. Pine tar is Brown! He was cheating, he knows it, Leyland knows it and his teammates knew it. You saw everyone kinda like whispering to him in between innings about that "mystery Substance'
If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it's a duck !
And to recant an answer by oJhmo: Dirt shows up black and not shiny. explain why the so called "dirt" was shiny, I"m no scientist but i know dirt doesn't show up shiny and fine. it shows up grainy and bland.
And I have been on a pitchers mound and that didn't show up shiny on my hands either.

Speculation is pointless - he pitched great with or without whatever it was. Probably the only reason he washed was because they were all whining about it.
And think about it - this is the World Series with all eyes and cameras on full tilt from every possible angle, you think anyone is going to be blatently doing something so dumb? The umpires dealt with it and their call stands!
