The post office offers a flat rate shipping for up to 70lbs that cost $8.10. I read that they offer a broke up stamp at $4.05 for the shipping. Does that mean I can send two packages as one so I don't get charged twice for the flat rate shipping?

I've never seen 70lbs fit in a flat rate box.

You're choices are getting a flat rate box which will ship for $8.10 and come in two sizes or using a flat rate envelope which will ship for $4.05. The packaging boxes are free but you must send them priority mail.

In my experience the flat rate boxes are a very good deal if you are shipping an item more than 3 lbs. from coast to coast or to an APO/FPO.

The reality of it is, the Post Office doesn't need, nor has it asked for a bailout. The Post Office is obligated to pre-fund retirement plans for several government agencies. No other government agency is required to do this. If this requirement was removed, then the PO would be operating well into the black. Congress basically has their greedy hands into the pot, and is spending money faster than they can collect it. If congress would follow the Postal Reform Act of 1970, then this would be a non issue. It's also funny that this all comes up right when the PO and the Carriers union are negotiating new contracts.

If it fits in the Flat Rate $8.10 box it costs $8.10
If it weighs a pound or less OR it fits in the flat rate envelope (not a box) it costs $4.05 for priority mail.
