Renault clio, may be small but has some decent acceleration ( I regularly leave performance cars standing on pullaway because the car is so light) and good fuel economy too.
Decent insurance too, because they aren't in the higher, more spendy class.

Mini
Clio RenaultSport (172 / 182 / 197)
new Clio Dynamique
new Suzuki Swift Sport
Grande Punto
Fiesta ST - although the Zetec looks quite good too
Seat Ibiza
Audi A2 - but its a very sophisticated form of cool
Skoda Fabia vRS
Panda 4x4
Toyota Aygo - but if you're male you need a lot of self confidence to be cool in something so cheap and low-powered
Nissan Micra - styling is an acquired taste, though

Avoid:
Peugeot 1007 and 206
Polo Dune
Citroën C3 XTR
Vauxhall Agila
Any car dressed up to be something its not (e.g. a Corsa with a rear wing like a Sierra Cosworth).

I would say either a Fiat 500 or a Fiat 600D these are small classic cars built in Italy from 1960 to 1970. You can pick them up here as they were also built right hand drive.
I am not sure of your age and the small engine size then you would get cheap insurance and even cheaper if you insured it as a classic car.
For insurance try confused.com
These cars can also be tax exempt so you would save not having to pay for tax.
As for mini's they are not cool, they are uncomfy and are uncool coz every body seems to want one or have one!
Be different, park a classic Fiat next to a mini and people would stop to talk about the Fiat.
As for a Clio every kunt has one.

You haven't mentioned how much you have to spend. Ignore the mini nuts - they're common as muck and too many estate agents drive them. What about a Seat Ibiza? Mazda MX-5's are cheap fun or if you want something a little different, a Raw Stryker would be more fun than a really fun thing.
