Depends on how you define better. More crime, less crime, more hate, less hate, more sickness, less sickness. The feel good mentality may be nice for some but progressives will never admit their policies always fail. There is a way that works and a way that doesn't. progressives exagerate about how much good they are doing then flat out lie about how bad the bad has become. You here them say things like; "If only" their ideas would be given an honest try then you would see the truth. The problem is they discount that we all have different needs and desires. I never tear the plastic rings apart on a six pack of colas because I do not care if a fish gets stuck in it or not. If that is your hot button then you fix it without my help or money. I support what I think is important and couldn't care less about things others think are important. You first need to define "better".

Politics in the Progressive Era were the root of government social programs, and were meant to help bring the country out of the depression. Works projects, welfare, social security, and many more similar programs were used for the first time by the government, and in current times we have come to expect this from them. To say they helped build a better America is to some people the correct answer, especially if they lived through the Great Depression. To other people, progressives were responsible for unprecedented growth in government, and brought about some of the arguments we are having in current politics regarding things such as health care, social security reform, and so on.

A good source to find your own answer, because there is no absolutely correct one, is by studying the Democrats and the presidency of F.D.R.

The Progressives buit many social safety nets that we take for granted and help the old and infirm.
But they also did away with huge swaths of government corruption (machine politics) and corporate monopolies (and their excesses).
The immense sucesses of post WWII America weren't possible without the empowerment of the middle class by the Progressive movement.
