There are very few tasks which can be done better by a human than a computer could be made to do. It's mostly a matter of cost. It's arguable that a computer could never feel sad or understand mother or really be self-aware.
There are plenty of books and movies about computers taking over. Each time we have computers take over a task, we slightly increase that risk. But we let a computer run the brakes of our car because we see the benefits outweighing the risk.

Yes. In about 50 years.
> what will happen if they get to be smarter and self-conscious.
You'll have a computer friend to chat with.
> Would they become tyranical or would they (being smarter) teach us to coexist with them.
We'll coexist. The artificial intelligences will be our friends and servants in ways we can't really imagine now.
> Would they devise a virtual world for us to live in?
Nope. We're doing a good job of that ourselves -- see Second Life.

It depends on how you define intelligence. Yes, computers are way better than humans when performing operational calculations. But they suck at facial recognition, identifying objects and reacting to novel stimuli. A baby has more ability in this area than a computer. The human brain is unique in that we can extrapolate from our prior experiences in determining what an object is. This data not only includes sounds, images and the like but touch, emotion, smell, etc. So if you see a fire on a match and a fire on a gas burner, you know both will burn you.
Computers will not even approach the functional intelligence of an infant for many decades to come. So, are they more intelligent? In some areas, yes, but they are a long way away from being able to survive without humans, and human creativity.

People ask this question alot, and I think I have a good answer. Machines can only do what they are programmed to do, period. Hence, self-awareness must be programmed into it, it cannot develop it on its own. In general, computers are dumb. They can only generate an output when given an input, that's all they can do. Personally, I see no benefit in a self-aware computer. Performing long complex calculations quickly is what makes them useful and they already do that now. Ultimately, the machine's capability lies in the hands of it's designer, so if we don't want machines deciding we are obsolete and overthrowing us, don't make them that smart.

Some would argue they are already more inteligent that we are, just look at some of the questions on here... or better yet, some of the answers.
They would probably just get rid of us as they would have no purpose for us, and I am sure they could care less than to make us a virtual world. That kind of sentiment is a human emotion.

Computers shall only have the reality given them by mankind. They shall never have the capacity to "care" or "understand" concepts apart from values imparted. There is a concept that illustrates this: "Knowledge and Numbers are neighbors. They never initiate a conversation, they never interrupt one, and they answer no more than necessary. Wisdom and Understanding are sisters. They help in the house, in the garden, and at work; and along the way they tell interesting stories."

Actually ... I think its already beginning. A few years back, there were studies done on robots that operated on artifcial intelligence ... and the robots actually showed signs of agression against each other! How can machinery become agressive? We rely on computers, but computers can function without us being there to control them. Programs run automatically on our PCs all the time that we didn't initiate. So considering that we need them but they don't need us, and the artificial intelligence story ... you never know what could happen.
Or maybe we've just watched The Terminator one time too many.

computer? its just a assemblly of hardware components who just knows to input data and output it after proccesing. any computer works according to the program writen in by the programer. speaking about the inteligence, that the computer only knows the processes or methods which are feed into it by us. i.e. a computer is used only to perform the proceesing of the inputed data according tio the logic provided by the programer. it can never become intelligent than the programer. speaking about A.I it is completly different in A.I the computer learns everything by its own experience just like a child a very small amount of programs or data are feed to them . but that also we have to tell him that how to interpret that data and use it as an experience. so no way a computer can be more intelligent than humans.

possible, but the human brain is much different from a computer as you probably know. The details how the human brain works are still largely unknown. Reproducing it is not in the near future.
oh and using 10% of your brain is a myth. People use most of their brain. Im sorry if youre an "exceptional" person.

did not you spot the Terminator video clips? and what's this study you talk of? Do you've faith ever study you examine? because there replaced into also a "study" carried out in 1951 that suggested by technique of the year 2000 we'd want to all be using round in our flying vehicles. the position are those flying vehicles they so expertly anticipated? 2080 is in difficulty-free words seventy 4 years away, no robots will be out of our administration.
