actually, I think they (David Lindeloff and J.J. Abrams and the bunch) disputed that one. That's not it. I don't think there really is a general reason as to why they're there... We know that there's a very strong magnetic thing that discharges when they push the button in the hatch and when Desmond didn't push it, they were pulled to the island... I think it's all just chance, or whatever... the real question isn't why they're there... it's who the heck ARE the others?? other than crazy people, i mean...

Yeah, I've heard the dead theory. I still believe that it's some type of scientific "think tank/experiment", not necessarily the government, but definitely someone with deep pockets. The experiment is sto measure the effects of stressful situations and how different people react. The Others are those who thought they were hired to "work" the experiments, but are actually part of the experiment, that's why they can't leave the island. And I still believe Jack's father isn't dead, that he's part of the whole thing.

They're not dead. That's been the theory out there since the show started. If you think Michael and Walt have "moved on"..they'll be back.
They are kind of in this Bermuda Triangle place and another theory I heard is that Desmond's g/f/ father is the owner and creator of Dharma.
And now Desmond has the ability to see the future, maybe he'll be able to tell us wht the hell is going on.

The Dharma Initiative is a sectio of the Hanso Foundation. The Hanso Foundation is funding the work done on the island. The Dharma Initiative is running several different parts of the island including electromagnetics (the hatch), Zoological studies (the polar bear; the cages jack, kate and sawyer are being held in), and psychological studies. just a thought =)

JJ Abrams has already said that nobody is dead, so assuming he didnt throw us a red herring, forget that. I def like the suggestion about the Good Ole Hanso Foundation is funding the experiments w/ the Others.
My original theory is that the Oceanic Flight 815 hasn't crashed and that this is all one passengers *my guess is Jack's* dream

Your husbands theory is very interesting. One giant dream perhaps. My theory is they're going to string this series out as long as they can for the ratings and we'll just keep getting more questions than answers

I've been trying to figure out the same thing. I like your husband's theory.
I was thinking something like The Others are the good guys, like Ben said, and they somehow selected the plane crash people to somehow "fix" them from their troubled pasts.
Still your theory is just as good!!
