I guess I never thought of it that way before. But you are right.

Biggest: That would be because cakes are typically of a larger nature and you don't want to have to saw your way through it.
Sharpest: If you use a dull knife it will compress the cake as you cut it making it misshapen and also break it up if it's real bad. A sharp knife slices through with very little resistance and makes a smooth cut, without compressing the height of the cake or breaking it up and creating a mess of crumbs.

To intimidate you! Just teasing. Depending on the cake - layer or pan - it makes it easier to slice through if you are using a larger knife. You also get better leverage..

A lot of times the cake tends to be big and sometimes frozen. We choose that big knife not to have a big fight and get any frosting on our fingers.

diameter is 14 inches. So the radius is 7 inches. Area as a whole is (pi)(r)^2. So: pi*7^2 =49pi. If we cut this into 16 equal pieces: 49pi/16 = 9.62 inch squares.

Well, if it's iced - especially with what's called Royal Icing, which is very hard - that's a right so-and-so to cut through neatly and accurately. If it's not iced, I take your point ... why bother?

To make it less messy when it's sliced. That sounds scary.
