Success in the natural born enemy of low esteem. Find something and do it. Get a job, play sports, volunteer your time to a charity. Start to learn something like web design or something and build web pages. In other words find something that will reward yourself. You begin to reward yourself and you will begin to wonder why you really cared what other people thought of you. Then you are free to be yourself around others and that will drive the shy away.
This is what worked for me. I was a complete social outcast because I was too afraid of how others thought of me. After taking karate and becoming a pretty decent football player, I got to the point where I could just walk up to people and talk. It was because I learned I was an individual and did not need the group collective to accept me. And out of some sort of paradox, that is what happened, the group collective accepted me.
