first, level out an area for the patio. clean out all the roots, big rocks, toys, leaves, etc. tamp down the dirt and try to keep it as level as possible. add a 4 to 6 inch layer of sand all over the patio area. spread it evenly and tamp the sand. you will have to go over the sand a few times with the tamp to make sure there are no spaces; again, try to keep the surface as level as possible. (You may need to install edging depending on the size of the patio, the size of the pavers and the space you want to leave between them.) once the sand is tamped, start laying out your stones. if you left a small gap between the stones (less than 2 inches), spread another layer of sand over the stones and spread it into the spaces with a broom. when all the spaces are full, spray the whole thing with a hose(you only want to get it wet enough to allow the sand to settle, don't soak it). let dry for a minute or two and check for settling.

You can do a couple of ways. Both require digging. And I am assuming that they are all irregular sizes. So the first step should be deciding on the size and shape of the patio area. Do this by marking it out with posts or spray paint. Next lay out a pattern.

If you want you can just dig a hole of the correspond dimensions of the stone and place it in the hole. Checking for levelness as you go. And that is it. This looks more natural and there is still grass between the stones. If this isn't the look that your looking for you can try this.

After you lay out your pattern draw that lay out on a piece of paper. The drawing doesn't have to be perfect. Then either tape or use a permanent marker (on the under side) to put a label on each one and mark that label onto the corresponding stone on your drawing. Remove the stones from the area and dig it out to a uniform depth depending on the thickness of stone adding about another inch so you can add loose soil or sand so you can level the stones while maintainging stability. (use sand if you plan to fill spaces with concrete or soil if you want it to grow.) Replace the stones accroding to the diagram you made and fill in the spaces between the each stone. Checking for levelness as you go. That's it.

Hope this helps

I made a stepping stone patio and it turned out great! First you need to remove all the grass. Put up a border to help keep everything in place, then add lots of sand (I went 2 inches deep) then really take your time and level it...you can pound in sticks and tie string going across at different angles at 3 inches up, then as you level use a ruler and if it shows 1 inch all over then it will be level. then set your stones where you want them and fill in all the cracks with peastone or more sand.

select an area and then dig out all of the grass. make it COMPLETELY level, other wise you will have problems. lay sand over that and level it. then place the square stones up to each other untill you are done.
