I hardly ever get sick and since last tuesday I have been sick. But not throwing up sick. My chest hurts, Im coughing and sneezing, My eyes itch and water (no allergies), if I lay down a certain way for longer than 15 minutes, my body is sore, I feel tired and my ears and throat hurt alot, and I wake up every night around 3am and cant fall back asleep. I dont know what this is since I dont get sick often... I cant go to the doctor because I have a high copay since I never dont usually go to the doctor... So how can I get better. I figured rest and fluids... So I stayed home all weekend and laid in bed, and ate chicken noodle soup and drank lots of water... Im still sick. I take day quil and it doesnt seem to do anything. Its starting to get cold where I live so Im assuming I have a cold/flu. I just want to get better... any ideas? Dont say go to the doctor... I cant afford it right now (college student).

I guess I'll show my age here but hopefully the suggestions will help.

I have found that there are basically two types of things that can hit us - viral and bacterial. through the years I have found the following combination to work the best. hope it works for you too.

If there is a Vitamin World near where you live (or go online) get a bottle of C&Zinc Lozengers and a bottle of Chewable Probiotic Acidophllus.

Use one C&Zinc Lozenger and two Acidophllus tablets at the same time (don't chew them), rather put all three in your mouth and let the desolve naturally. DON'T eat or drink 20 minutes before and 15 minutes after each usage. Use several times a day but read the directions specifically on the C&Zinc Lozengers as zinc is a metal.

Avoid drinking orange juice or other citrus juices as they will counter the affects of the C&Zinc Lozengers.

This regiment is especially helpful as a precaution - when I get around anyone with a cold or sniffles I shortly afterwards take a dose as described above. May be expecially helpful for a college student.

I would also stay away from day/quil only because it is of no health value and may slow down healing. Nightquill may helpful for getting rest but still the same concern for slowing down healing.

Consider purchasing a copy of "Prescription to Natural Health" at the health food store. Lots of good stuff about staying healthy. However, the above suggestion is not in the book comes from the experience of many years.

If I had to guess I'd suspect you have the flu (viral) and the C&Zinc will be most helpful. The Acidophllus will help you digestive system to process the neutriants more effectively. Acidophllus also will add healthy bacterial, normally found in the ddigestive system, and if by chance you have a bacterial infectioin it will clear it up quickly. Run the routine several times a day - and keep it up for about 7 days after you feel better.

A couple of years ago I came down with Strep Throat and the Acidophllus cleared it up in two days. I did keep up the use of Acidophllus for about ten day to be on the safe side.

Oh yes, the only side affect I am aware of with Acidophllus is if you take too much it can cause diarreha - but I have taken tons without any side affects. Even my daughter has been taking Acidophllus for years without any side affects - since she was 1 year old.

Good luck.

Take a cold medicine for the coughing, sneezing, watery/itchy eyes. Take Mucinex for the chest pain. If you are getting chest congested the key is to break it up to prevent pneumonia. Hot showers and the steam will help break up any congestion. If your cough is productive then keep it coming. Cough as much of it up as you can. Take Dayquil during the day but Nyquil at night. A restful sleep is going to help more. Make sure you keep an eye on your throat and ears. Any white puss pockets on the throat may be strep and copay or not, needs a doctors attention. When cleaning your ears make sure to look at the color of the wax, I know it sounds gross but any odd discoloration may be indicative of an ear infection.

Not only just water, try some orange juice. Pump up the Vitamin C. Saline Spray up your nostrils will help with any dryness the cold medicine could be causing your nasal passages.

Otherwise, you seem to be doing what you are suppose to do. SLEEP. DRINK LOTS, and above all just rest.

Hope you get feeling better soon!!

You may have mono. I don't know exactly what to tell you but I would really try hard to see a doctor to make sure there's nothing else wrong. I Don't hardly get sick either but last year I had mono and I thought I could handle it. I did'nt go to the doctor for a while. It got worse and ended up being something serious. I'm not saying waste your time with a flu shot. There's not much you can do but wait Drink some Thera-Flu it will make you a little better. Hope you feel better.

Well my poor dear it seem that you may have a case of the flu bug. That is the way it makes you feel. If you don't go to the doctor the best thing I would recommended is to get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids. and eat chicken soup and crackers. Now for the nausea feeling I would suggest ginger ale and soda crackers. I sure hope you get to feeling better. If you start having any high fever you better go to the doctor it might settle in to something else. I will pray for you.l

It is a cold. I have the same thing. Just keep checking the color
of the yuk you are coughing up and look up pneumonia in
webmd.com.

I doubt you have it, I don't either. The cold DOES take up to
14 days to take off. I'm on # 10.

good luck

Time, bed rest and try echinacea (a few drops in a glass of water will boost the immune system). Remember every acute illness is self limiting and will not be much longer than 2 week if you are generally in good health.
