I have a 94 pontiac firebird trans am.

It was happening when it was warm outside.

Check engine also comes on after idling sometimes. I don't know if that's related.

how do I fix the problem?

would being unplugged make the temp too low?

Many times that sensor comes uplugged when changing out the air filter. I am assuming you have a 5.7.
If so, the sensor is on the air inlet tube just as it makes the bend and goes into the throttle body. Some times I have seen this wire actually drop down and get cut by the belt. It is a 2 wire loom. If you have a different engine, let me know. Yes, it could also be the cause of the Check engine light coming on at idle, in fact, I would count on it ! It sets a hard code.

there's a sensor in the airbox or near the air filter that measures the inlet temp so the computer knows whether to richen the mixture when cold or to make various mixture adjustments accordingly.

After reading your questions about cold temperatures, I think you need to move to a warmer climate.
