People, Who think that its OK under certain circumstances to give our freedoms away. and people who stand by and do nothing because they think it could never happen here

Benjamin Franklin's..Wisdom

They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security.

Those who govern, having much business on their hands, do not generally like to take the trouble of considering and carrying into execution new projects. The best public measures are therefore seldom adopted from previous wisdom, but forced by the occasion.

To Follow by faith alone is to follow blindly

Tricks and treachery are the practice of fools, that don't have brains enough to be honest

Fascism. Another name for it is Political Correctness. Just read where some town in Wisconsin, if memory serves, asks you to call 911 if you observe anyone smoking a cigarette. You can inform on your neighbor. Denounce him or her to the state. The police will come and arrest that person. Recently some poor clod in the UK was fined something like 300 pounds, maybe $570, for putting one piece of paper in the wrong recycling trash bag. No one saw him do it. He denied doing it. He stated that anyone could have placed the paper in the bag while it was on the sidewalk. He now has a criminal record for life. A woman ticket agent for British Airways was placed on leave because she would not remove her gold cross on a necklace. While Muslims and Sikhs were permitted to wear symbols of their faith. Sexual harrassment? There are no firm laws on this. It is what a woman, any woman, says it is. Remember that guy who was an executive for Miller Brewing? They were discussing a Seinfeld show where the word "clitoris" was used, or implied. A woman asked this guy what the word was because no one else would tell her. He wouldn't either, but he got a dictionary and pointed the word out to her. Bingo! She filed a sexual harrassment suit against him and he lost everything he had. His job, family, life savings, completely wiped out. He won on appeal, but lost on another appeal just a short time ago. This case was on Court TV and I remember several witnesses testifying that this woman had a pretty foul mouth. Cussed like a sailor. Around her coworkers. She admitted it. So what? Political Correctness. An insidious form of Fascism. Orwell and others maintained that limits of freedom are erected by the government. Not at all. Freedom is assaulted by ordinary people. Medlers in other people's business. You can be denounced to the authorities, fined for something you didn't do, or convicted on a gross perversion of the law. By your friends and neighbors and just about anybody. See the Manhatten Beach day care trials a few years ago. A gross perversion of the law. See what is happening to the Duke lacrosse players. Arrested on a lie and prosecuted by a corrupt DA. Read the London Telegraph and the Daily Mail every day. It's real bad over there. It all starts from the bottom.

Complacency, lack of respect for those who would do or say the right thing (political correctness), fear, and things of this nature challenge freedom. There's an abundance of this everywhere you go. Also greed, apathy, self servience, self centeredness ignorance, lack of opportunity. Any one of these puppies can be found in any workplace, classroom, street, tv channel, web site, household, or in any mind and heart of those who could care less about anyone else besides themselves. I would welcome any suggestion in my life at this point concerning these topics. I work hard every day...and so does my family...and for what...to live a mediocre, middle classed life as I was born into?....it seems class has something to do w/ it...one can never seem to break the bubble they were born into it seems...the rich stay rich, the poor stay poor...and if anyone does make the jump it seems to be national headlines...people on latenight tv preying on those who can't sleep (prolly because they are facing financial hardship) offering "get rich quick" scams...where does it end?...The level of greed and corruption is apparent in every level of society...whether it's religons offering some sort of magical salvation, medical practitioners running people through blood filters...whatever...people are more contented to "go by the book" than use they're own brain to solve any given problem. That to me is how it all starts. Complaciency. Oh..I was just following the rules...instead of doing the right thing. Patriotism is a dying breed my friend...and this challenges the freedom of all "the poor, the sick, the huddled masses, yearning to be free" (quoted from the Statue of Liberty)

There are many challenges to maintaining a free society.

A big challenge is to make people realize that sacrifices are necessary to accomplish a free society.

Fear:

Scary times are the most vulnerable times to freedom. It is too easy for all of us all to support profiling, invasion of privacy and unlawful detention when our lives are at stake.

Can we really sacrafice safety and stand vulnerable and strong against all reductions of freedoms? We can do better at valuing freedom and ethical behavior even when faced with extreme danger. True character is measured in our ability to hold on to our values while facing adversity.

The main problem is maintaining freedom of the media in a time of war.
And allowing personal conduct which may be harmful to oneself or other (drugs, prostitution)

Allowing others to be free, even if it does not match your ethics, undermines your sense of safety, or interferes with your perceived freedom.
