I've just been told that the dull pain in my lower stomach is probably a grumbling appendix. I have to go for tests but if it is, I am probably going to have my appendix removed.

Has anybody else had this and what can I expect from the hospital tests I'm being sent for?

Sorry, I've been to the Dr's this afternoon. He says that in his opinion he thinks it's a grumbling appendix so I'm being sent for confirmation tests at the hospital. It's on my right side, by the way.

I ignored mine when it grumbled (stomach pains, nasty poo, generally feeling rubbish) in fact, it wasn't until I couldn't really walk because of the pain that I was persuaded to see someone about it. I then had a rectal exam (don't get excited boys, its not as much fun as it sounds!), an x-ray plus a load of blood tests. My white count was up which alerted them to the infection and finally a surgeon tapped my stomach in a well practised way which made me hit the ceiling - that was the final diagnosis. I had surgery the next day.

I wish I had acted sooner as my operation was quite complicated, I was out of action for 3 weeks and it took months to recover fully and now I have a massive shark-attack style scar. If they had gone in sooner, then they can do it with a little incision.

Say my advice, go for the tests and go soon! I doubt they will be much more than blood tests, but you might have to have a rectal. Its not nice, but think of the alternatives...

Lot of problems tonight where I don't really think Answers is a safe or reliable option. There is much debate about the whole concept of grumbling appendix, with many surgeons refusing to accept it is an entity at all. Personally I am convinced it does occur as witnessed that many appendices at surgical removal show scarring, which means that they must have been inflamed in the past. In a female of course the other R sided anterior organ is an ovary, there are certainly conditions where this can cause chronic pain. I am afraid, corny as it sounds, if things are not settling down you need to go back to your GP. A simple FBC, ESR and urine check, taken when you have the pain would help make the diagnosis, certainly a normal white blood count and negative urine would exclude many of the possibilities. An ultrasound would also be likely to help make the diagnosis.

I don't want to scare you but when I had a bad Appendix the doc stuck a finger up my bum and touched it and it hurt like hell, a reall pain(no pun intended) is the Appendix as it serves no purpose in humans.

You did not say what side go to the hospital and tell themmore than this you are very vague, your abdomen downthere is very large and many things could be wrong too many for this small space
