As far as the public knows, there's no ethical line to be crossed. As long as it's not illegal, someone's probably done it. Even if it was, they'd find some way to spin it to the media and make them look good. It's their job. They're trying to gain votes so they can be in a position of power, and that notion can blind many of us. The bottom line is, they're just doing what they have to do to win, and if you want to do something about it, then it's up to us to teach the new generation differently.

If there is an ethical line to be crossed, I am sure that the Repubs will find a way to do so and blame everyone else when they get caught.

Yes, we refer it to as "American Style Political Campaigning". It's what politicians in Europe accuse each other of. ;)

I seriously don't know how you can have such lax rules about political campaigning and then hopelessly strict rules about TV-shows and what is allowed there.

There are many. One that comes to mind is accepting money from intrest groups, lying to voters and rigging the election as the Bush team did.
