I can't only think of a few.

Want something to watch on a rainy night on video.

Not the standard fare cops and robbers and action adventures. Something more complex, sophisticated with a story line and acting. Might be a bot much to ask?

Definitely not American college films. These are the pits.

For an English taste.

There are many amazing films. It is all down to taste of course but here are some of my personal favourites:

Dead Man's Shoes (if violence doesn't upset you too much)
Shaun of The Dead (Simon Pegg - I love you)
A Room for Romeo Brass
Lantana (Brill Aussie film)
Memento
The Proposition (written by Nick Cave - Starring Ray Winstone)
Rain (Wonderful little NZ coming of age movie)
Pi
Cube (v low budget)
La Haine
Requiem for a Dream
Being John Malkovich
The Talented Mr Ripley
Spider

...you know what - I could go on forever. Watch the ones I have suggested and get back to me for more good advise...

"Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" by the Cohen brothers was pretty good. It's the Odyssey, re-set in depression-era Mississippi. It also has a great sound track, if you like bluegrass. Note that, if bluegrass isn't your thing, you should probably stay away from it.
