Curly was in a class by himself, but as I got older, I began to appreciate Shemp a lot more.

You have left out Joe, and Curly Joe. (neither of them were ever my faves, but you have to include them when speaking of the "third Stooge")

I personally love Larry. I don't think he gets the credit he deserves as most of the time he was in the background. But watch his facial expressions and every so often when he gets the spotlight! He is hilarious! I love Disorder In The Court, when he takes the gum from Moe's nose, throws it to the floor and stomps on it, then lets out a celebratory "whoop", only to have Moe whack him and say, "Your in a court of law, not in the woods, Tarzan. SIDDOWN!"

Curly is probably the answer most would give - he was given the vast majority of the "innocent" roles, while brother Moe would play the "heavy" and Larry would facilitate both - being innocent to Moe, while picking on Curly. Shemp never had the charismatic appeal of Curly, but was a terrific physical comedian.

The Three Stooges were a hugely popular film comedy team of the mid-1900s. The original trio were Moe Howard (born Harry Horwitz, 1897-1975), his brother Curly (born Jerry Horwitz, 1903-1952), and Larry Fine (born Louis Feinberg, 1902-1975). Stooge comedy consisted mainly of slapstick eye-gouging, shin-kicking, head-knocking, and the like. The group made nearly 200 comedy shorts between 1934 and 1958. The first 97 starred the original trio; after Curly suffered a stroke in 1946, he was replaced by his brother Shemp, then by Joe Besser, and finally by 'Curly Joe' De Rita.

Shemp was the first stooge. He moved off to create a solo carreer and in walked Curly. The act took off and when Curly went down and Curly Joe was not the anwer, big brother came back to the rescue. But, you have to go with Curly because he was the lovable one. Shemp seemed a little out of place being as he was the original big brother and Moe took that spot in the act.

I prefer Curly - Shemp was technically first (Curly joined the act when Shemp went solo; Shemp returned to the act when Curly died), but I never got the impression that Shemp really belonged in the Stooges as much as Curly did . . . and that feeling grew worse through the Years of Joes. Curly was a force of nature, sadly missed at his passing, and ever since.

I liked Curly. Man he was funny. Shemp was funny but a little strange. Curly was all out funny. I think his voice and appearance helped him.
