In the computer word AT and @ are vastly different so it's an easy place holder in address, if we didn't to that you couldn't use any word with AT in it. In the past @ was used in prices 15 @ $1 meant 15 at $1 each so @ was really use to replace two words at and each. Also printing cost at one time were by the letter so AT cost more then @. Also in prices you had a little more room and could make the letters bigger and easier to read.

The "@" symbol originated with Gregg shorthand and in accounting books -- as in, "7 widgets @ $7.77 per widget." I'm not sure how it got transferred to the computer, though. However, when taking notes or writing longhand, it does make things much faster.

So, basically, it started with handwriting, not computers.

For use in email, it's to distinguish between the left and right sides of the address.

In business, it's used in calculations; I think it's just to make it clear. It also means "at the rate of."

because they think its cute or 1337, i think its retarded, it still takes the pressing of 2 keys to make fewer charaters, and pressing a-t is faster than shift-2. they just like to draw atention to thier writing, its usually myspacer-girls that do it in thier school letters and stuff, and that abbrievation of letters like "i got 2 go" and stuff like that actually takes over, ive seen some papers that i had to grade that actually looked like a myspace letter, and she horribly failed the paper, its quite sad
