Don't be too swayed by brand name recognition for such a simple product as an internal DVD burner. With all due respect to previous respondants, it's not like you're buying a 50" LCD or something.
My point is simple : look at specs, price & warranty .... that's all. They are both great brands. Liteon makes the dual layer lightscribe DVD burners for all HP Media Centers PCs .... that's a pretty impressive pin on their chest.
Liteon earns it living on PC products .... Sony couldn't care less if their burners are well received or not ...it ain't their bread 'n butter.

Sony and Lite-On are both very good manufacturers and DVD writers today can be bought for under £40. What you should look for is the overall feature set. Make sure the drive has the following features:
1. DVD RW± : this meand the drive can write both DVD+RW and DVD-RW.
2. Dual Layer : this means the drive can write those 9.4Gb discs
3. 16x : this means the drive can write DVDs at 16 speed. It should be able to write to CDs (CD-R/CD-RW) at 24x.
4. LiteScribe : this means the drive can burn labels and logo unto the disc surface. This isn't an essential feature but is a useful touch. It racks up the drive's price though.
5. DVD-RAM : this is support for a different type of disc. Discs that can be written unto and erased randomly i.e. individual files can be deleted. This is similar to the UDF system of CDs. Support for DVD-RAM drives is not too essential but is a nice bonus.
Personally, I had rather buy a Lite-On drive. Goodluck.
NB: the price I gave you is for internal IDE drives. External drives (USB or FireWire) are a bit more expensive.

It is your choice what to buy.
BUT, judging from the problems I personally have had with Sony and warranties, they would be my LAST choice.
I have had liteon's that lasted quite well, and some that didn't.
I have NEVER had a Sony last as long as almost any other brand. (I use the drive a lot!!)
My favorite brand, however, is Plextor for DVD writers, I use a Multi-Format, dual layer drive. Also, when using systems OTHER than windows, I have less trouble getting the necessary drivers for Plextor's (I have SEVERAL computers using different systems!)

Hi, go for the sony, for one because they are made in Japan. If wondering about the Liteon, if it is made in Japan it should be fine because Japan usually makes the best stuff.
