My family is going visit an alpaca farm next weekend and I wanted to bring something that we could hand feed to the animals (with the owners permission, of course) Do they eat apples or carrots or something like that?

Hmm...at both zoo's I've worked at we fed our Alpacas straw and a grain mix. I would actually contact the owner because most likely they will be funny with you bringing food for the animals. Also I noticed from working with 100's of species of exotics is sometimes they get food favorites...this all can be found out by calling the farm! Good luck!

Alpacas are a type of ruminant, with three stomachs, and a very efficient digestive system, converting food into energy with little wastage. They enjoy short moist grass, plus hay when the grass is limited. In the winter you could allow a small (square) bale of hay per month for each animal and some calf nuts. They enjoy twigs but they rarely ring bark trees unless extremely short of food.
