well unlike the republicans they think gay marriages are ok, and they agree with abortion, they favour ethnic minorities and the working classes, they advocate civil liberties, social freedoms, equal rights, they are opposed to torturing terrorists for information, they believe all women should have a right to birth control, they want to introduce tighter gun control, envorinmentalists, and they support federally funded stem research.

Well, not all democrats believe the same thing, just as republicans don't all believe, the same thing. The issue that makes one a democrat may be the total opposite of what makes another. The major platforms of the Democratic Party in this upcoming elections are (in no particular order):
Universal Healthcare
Cheaper, Cleaner, Energy Sources
Betterment of Education
Alternate Strategy in "War on Terror"
Postulating for the "Working Man"
Environmental Responsibility
Freedom of Choice
And many more...
Any one of which of those platforms can make a democrat, or at any varying degree their importance.
The choice really is up to the independant "democrat"
P.S. I guess I would not, then, be considered a "Born again Democrat"...

There was a time, not all that long ago, when that question was fairly easy to answer. Today, it's difficult to say. I think the Democratic party has lost sight of its core beliefs: education, care for the elderly, and protection of the environment. They have adopted too many social issues that mainstream America simply doesn't want.
The country sorely needs the Democratic party to return to its senses sometime soon.

Well To me it seems that many of the people on this site do not have a clue to what they stand for in general. There's wackos in every party but in general. They believe in upholding the constitution. The rights that this country was founded on FREEDOM. Not staying the course, WE DO SUPPORT THE TROUPES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But not the reason that led us there in the first place. Believe in speaking our minds and question authority. Believe in the working class. That's just some there is tons more.

That the money you earn is not yours, its theirs to take and give to someone else. That only the government can take care of you and that you are not smart enough to take care of yourself. That people should be divided into groups and only certain groups deserve certain benefits. An example being that in my state, which as a Democrat Governor, only elderly people and low income people deserve property tax relief and not everyone else. That we should appease and try to talk to the enemies that wish only to destroy us instead of seeking them out and destroying them first. Just a few things, there are more.

to talk about all beliefs individually would take up too much space and too much time, and might even crash the system lol. but i can sum it up with this. we believe in the ability to disagree, even within our own party, and that no one, democrat or republican, is always right and therefor we are always looking for a better answer.

It depends on what controversy of their opponents they can bring up. They stand for nothing! All they do is criticize anybody who is not "one of them". Libs stand only for symbolism, not substance.
