I'm doing an IT project in college which requires me to track a person's movement within a certain area (less than 100m squared)? I want to track avg speed, distance, etc. This information will be stored in software I'm creating. Any ideas what technology is out there? It doesn't have to been pinpoint accurate. Thanks

Definitely RFID.
GPS is bulkier, more expensive, and it may not work at all if you are on the ground floor of a tall building.
Have a look at this project:

I've heard of an RFID implementation whereby students are tracked via RFID tags implanted on their school bags or school uniform. Everytime a student passes through the school gate which is within the proximity of the reader, data is saved on the server and is also able to sms the student's parents that his son has passed through the school gate.

If you need to track avg speed and distance, install more readers around the college area. With all the information collected within the database server, you could calculate and pinpoint where a student was at a particular time.
