The rise of the European middle class gave the Renaissance its impetus. Individuals in cultures that have no significant middle class are either appreciating the arts for their monetary value, or are struggling so hard to eke out a living that the arts are meaningless to them. Any nation that does not have a large, viable middle class will eventually collapse. It has happened again and again throughout history.
