Well, if it's under $10,000 cash you won't have to declare it! seriously, I like travelers' cheques and a credit card, it's easier, and if either gets lost you can either be reimbursed or place a stop order on it so you aren't out of anything or financially damaged too much.

open a Citibank direct current account and pay money in.Withdraw as needed at ATM's in USA.Exchange rate is best you will get-plus you get 4% interest on the money in your account.2nd best would be $s from M&S as their exchange rate is market best for cash/TC's in UK.
