I thought this is what they are called?

You live in a house, but is it a bungalow or a castle, a terrace or a caravan??

We didn't make up those words. Those are the words for 'house' used by Indians and Eskimos. I can only imagine how silly 'house' sounds to Indians and Eskimos.

Because those are the words that were chosen to represent those things..... just like we call a grass house a hut and a small, one-story, wooden home with a porch a bungalow.

Same reason we call a bungalow a bungalow and a kiosk a kiosk pyjamas pyjamas , cul de sac a cul de sac and jodphurs jodphurs. They're foreign words which have been imported into the English language.
