I hated public speaking, but I loved speech class (kinda weird isn't it).
The Demonstration Speech was the best I thought. I went to college in Milwaukee and grew up in SE Alaska. When I lived in Alaska, I used to fish on the ocean for salmon. I brought in a fishing pole, the associated gear (weights, flashers, hooks), a rubber herring (from a fishing lure), and personal knowledge. I demonstrated the proper way to cut a herring and put it on the hook. I then talked about proper pound test for fishing line, how deep to put the line out, and factors that can change the strategy (trolling, anchoring, how big the tide, direction of tide, etc..).
I chose this topic for a couple of reasons...
1. It was something I enjoyed
2. It was something I had access to the equipment for (I had to borrow some)
3. It was something there were few experts on in Milwaukee.
I remember some other guy explained and demonstrated Cricket to the class. Other showed how to make a high calorie drink for cheap using ony a hot pot. Another demonstrated the use of massaging and enery points to get rid of headaches. A friend of mine demonstrated how to install vinyl siding (he built a fake wall and everything). One person showed how to change grips on golf clubs. One demonstration was about martial arts (showd Tae Kwon Do techniques to break boards)
I would recommend choosing a topic that is something unique and not many people would know anything about. This helps boost your confidence (as it is something you know about) and reduces the chances for complicated questions.
Are you a gambler? Talk about card counting strategies in blackjack or poker strategies.
Are you a handyman? Show how to install pergo flooring, drywall, how to wire electric, or sweat a plumbing fitting.
You a hunter? Take some photos of some deer sign, bring in some topgraphical maps, and discuss how you might find deer, when to still hunt or use a tree stand, etc..
Are you an auto mechanic? Do a power point presentation with pictures and a real example of how to rebuilt a carburetor.
Are you a cook? Bring in a small gas grill and demonstrate the finer points of grilling a steak.
Did you play D&D as a teenager? Bring in a book and a bored and show how its played (sorry, I don't know anything about this one).
To you brew your own beer? That would be a demo any college student would find useful.
The topic doesn't need to be complicated. Just think of the speech like you were teaching a friend how to do something. It could be as simple as the proper way to transplant a flower. Just find something you are good at, is not dangerous to demonstrate, and uses things small enough for a few people to carry to class.
Good Luck
