I am most impressed by George Washington's reputation among his contemporaries. During the Constitutional Convention, George Washington was the ONLY man in the country whose reputation was sufficient to allow him to preside over that Convention. He was the only man in the country, whom all of the Delegates respected enough, to listen to.
All George Washington had to do, during the Convention, was to sit through the different meetings, giving one person and then another the permission to speak. "Okay, now it's your turn." "No, you'll get to speak, in a minute." "Okay, you're next." But no one else in the country had the presence, the authority to cause all of those argumentative Delegates to listen, when he spoke.
Not only did George Washington preserve the Continental Army through the war years, saving it from destruction. He also proved indispensable to the creation of the Constitution and the formation of the Republic.
