I live in Virginia and it's a nice place to live. There is great access to culture in the Washington, DC area. The climate is decent in the winter, although we do get snow. The job situation here is amazingly robust and unemployment is very low.

As for state landmarks in Virginia, there are zillions of them. George Washington's home and Thomas Jefferson's home are both active tourist locations. Many important Civil War battles were fought in Virginia, such as Manassas/Bull Run, Fredericksburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg and Appomattox, where Robert E Lee surrendered to Ulysses S Grant. The first British colony in North America was in Virginia (Jamestown). George Washington's Colonial Army defeated the British at Yorktown, VA, to end the Revolutionary War.

As for other events, I just went to a big hot-air balloon festival in Long Branch, VA, in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. There are NASCAR race tracks, big college football, the shore at Virginia Beach, whitewater rafting, hiking the Appalachian Trail and the new Air & Space Museum at Dulles Airport.

There are many reasons why Virginia is a nice place to live.
