It is virtually impossible to sex oscars until they are adults. That would be about 12-14 inches. Then, you turn them upside down and call over the closest fish expert to look at their vents. The male's will be shaped differently than the female's. His should look like a circle and hers should look like a notched circle.

Even if you have one male and one female, there is no guarantee that they will be compatible. There is a very complicated ritual that cichlids go through to choose their mates. It involves overall condition, strength and agression.

Sometimes even the oscars can't tell and two females will lay eggs and guard them. Naturally, since they are not fertilized, none will hatch and they will all fungus.

The only way to be sure you get a compatible pair is to buy 6-10 young oscars and raise them all together. They will naturally pair off and you should get at least one pair if not a couple.

Doing this would require at least a 125 gallon tank and would be better in a 175.

It is virtually impossable to sex oscars. The best things to do are watch them breed or vent them. Venting involves getting a close look at the fish's underside. It is very hard for someone without experiance to do it.
The only other thing to try is.... Both sexes have two holes. The males are the same size and the female has one larger hole. Looks like this...

oo=Male
oO=Female

Its not easy. Look under the fish, towards its tail. If its a female, it will have a hole. If its a male, it will have a protrusion. However, these are very small and will need magnification. (Its not easy holding a fish upsode down while looking through a magnifying glass!)
