Whatever you do don't take the apple advice they are absolutely useless when it comes to the internet and playing games. I would get dell like mentioned above but with the longest warranty that you can find. Comptuer will start breaking in about two years trust me I have repaired alot of computers and the warranty has saved the owner alot of money.

As for playing games check out dells XPS series they are made just for games. That dosen't mean that they want do other stuff it just means that it should play games without problems. Alienware makes good gaming PCs too. But just save your self some trouble and don't buy any Apple/Mac products the only good device that Apple has made was the ipod.

If your girlfriend has got the money, than she could pretty much buy her son any computer, but I would suggest sticking with something basic, nothing too fancy. If her son is not too familiar with computers, I would suggest buying him a console, like PS2, XBOX, etc., they are relatively maintenance free and are not that easy to get destryoed. Unlike computers which can basically go dead if you mess around and not know what you are doing. That is unless you have computer savvy people in the house who can fix what's wrong with the computer, then by all means by a computer. I would recommend a HP computer mainly because they make the process of reformatting easier, in case you have to. They put the recovery data on a separate partition on your hard drive so you don't have to fiddle around with recovery discs and the like.

If he has never had a computer before, I suggest checking with a local computer shop for a "used" unit.
They are usually fairly inexpensive, and will do until he learns how to use one.
OR
You can buy almost ANY "good" brand. Just remember that it does NOT need to be a "top of the line" model with all the bells and whistles, and many reputable companies make them "to order" for specific purposes such as gaming, business work, etc.

What you get depends a lot on what you want to spend, from about $350 to over $4,000

Get him a nice Dell , HP , Sony or Toba , anyone on the market right now should be fine. Get a Intel Dual Core Processor ( Cheap and very fast ) also at least 1G of ram . For it will be Windows Vista Ready ( thats the new Windows )

Should be under $300 for the tower

Stay away from gateway and emachine

at the rate that computers become obsolete I would recommend getting him a cheap emachine(made by gateway) or compaq computer. These are basic machines that you can get for $350-$500 dollars with plenty of memory and gaming abilities. Look for packages at Best Buy that have big rebates or go online to ebay or tigerdirect to find cheap systems.

if you are going for a laptop then go with these brands for a decent machine

just think if you use it for 3 years then you can easily scrap the whole system and you will have got your money's worth and can update to a new system

If he likes video games, get him an Alienware computer. If he wants to get creative and do multimedia stuff, get him a MacBook. And if he just wants to fart around on the computer and like any other 13 year old just Myspace and download porn, get him a cheapo Dell or Gateway PC.
