people who have the money to dress nicely are the ones who look down on the ones who can't afford it. i think it's not fair. why is this?

it's a control mechanism of the powerful to keep the less powerful in their place.

I think it's rude of them to do so, but style doesn't take money. It just takes sense.
Perhaps they do so because they spend their lives obsessed with fashion and the way they look, so they evaluate all fashion that comes before them?
Even so they ought to keep their opinions to themselves... perhaps...

Next time someone criticises your outfit, say nothing about the price. Say instead that you chose those clothes because they best express the inner you, and then drop it.

Just tell them you dress the way you feel comfortable and not to prove a point or show off.
Ignore them.
