I am close to filing a lawsuit against my former landlord for an unreturned security deposit (five months with no explanation or returned calls).
I am in NY, the landlord is in LA. Who would I need to contact to proceed with the claim?

I am willing to fly to LA to appear in court, as the deposit was almost the equivalent of 2 months rent. Also, it's the principle.

This depends.
Did the landlord LEASE the house IN new york? Does the Landlord has any property in NY? If so you might be able to sue in NY.
However if you only dealt with your landlord in LA you will have to go through LA's courts:

I believe you need to file in the city in which you lived. If you are in NY and you then lived in L.A., you would have to appear for the court date. Im not sure if it would be worth the effort.

Contact your county clerks office. They have all the paperwork you will need and can help you to file. LA county clerk that is.
