It's an "interesting" experience - but I imagine "what it's like" depends a lot on how long you think/know you're going to be there.
I was in only overnight, and I knew I'd be out in the morning ( A policeman who was having a bad night arrested me for "Hindering a police officer in the performance of his duties by failing to have a valid ID on his person")
So, knowing it was a trumped-up charge and that I'd be free very soon, I was able to rather enjoy it. I had some interesting conversations with my nearby fellow prisoners (all of whom would NOT be getting out in the morning), and, when I was released, I went to McDonald's and bought them all Big Macs, fries and cokes.
However, even knowing I'd be out soon, I started to feel claustrophobic in the cell (and I'm not someone who ever feels that way, usually.) Under different circumstances, I can easily see how being locked up for a long time would be terrible.
That's one reason I'm against the death penalty - it's too easy. I'm sure I'd rather be dead than spend the rest of my life in prison.

When i was taking criminal justice we went to auburn state prison in ny to oversee how they do their version of the "scared straight" program.
personally it was the most terrifying thing i ever experienced. they showed us the homemade weapons (broomsticks with razors put in the sides...ewe etc) we had to sit and listen to the lifers, even though the lifers uses different stories as top why they are in their, they really cant tell you the real ones)
lets just say, if I ever become a cop. I dont feel like I'll feel that bad for those who do things to end up in prision...

My wife worked as a prison nurse for a while. It's cold and they don't give you many clothes to keep you warm. Oh and don't drop the soap in the shower.

it is not all that scary , but it is boring as all Hell . If you go to the joint just remember that 90 precent of the people are scared to death, dont act tough just keep to yourself and you will be fine , over time you will run into a trusted group , I sugest if do go to stick to the people with the same skin color as you .
