We have this problem all the time, I live in phoenix AZ so we don't make fires all that often. You need to put a screen cap on your chimney so you can prevent them from coming in anymore. Make sure you get them out first though, if they have fallen down like the pigeons did with us, you will have to extract them manually from the actual fireplace. Otherwise just build a small fire with some grass or something that smokes alot and they'll leave. Good Luck

Call a Chimney Sweep

We had to call someone in to take the birds out safely. They pushed them down some how. It was a bit messy. Be sure that you have a screen placed on the top of your chimney after they are removed.

One way to rid your chimney of birds or any other animal humanely, is to go to the local feed and seed store and purchase a bottle of fox or coyote urine (seriously). Open the flu and carefully sprinkle a few drops on the upper side of the flu (don't get any on you) and then close it. This is how predators mark their territory. The natural prey, i.e. the birds will flee, as will mice, rats, possums, raccoons, etc. Works great for keeping pests out of your attic, as well. Cheaper than exterminators and leaves no corpses which cause fly and ant infestations.

Go up on your roof, look down in your chimney with a flush light, pull out their nesting stuff with a hooked pole and then secure a wire screen (protruding up not down) on the top of your chimney and they will find another place to socialize and/or do whatever they do in your chimney.

Chimney of your fire place? Just light a VERY small fire and add some green grass or something like that to create lots of smoke and they will leave.

Chimney of your furnace? Not sure what to do about that. same thing I guess.

Just make the fire more smokey than fire and heat, you don't want to kill them.

I would start a fire in the chimney, I'm sure that will get rid of them

Start a small paper fire, the smoke will run them out. If they have baby's, they will die and the parents will not return, although you will have an odor to put up with. Good luck.
