The story begins in 1990, when a small group of development activists located themselves in a 32 acre plot of dry, degraded land. They gave it the name Timbaktu in Sarihaddu Rekha,Telugu in Anantapur district , Andhra Pradesh, India.

Timbuktu région was created in 1977 from the western part of Gao région. Salt is mined in the north at Taoudenni and is transported by camel caravan south to the town of Timbuktu, the région capital. The principal irrigated crops grown in the NigerRiver Valley are corn (maize) and rice. Population groups in the région include the nomadic Tuaregs and Moors in the Sahara and Songhai and Fulani peoples in the irrigated valley.
