Train from Madrid to Valencia (or vice-versa) is excellent. It takes 3h 20min. and the cost is 40,60 €
But I don't think it would be worth your while taking a train from Valencia or Madrid to Rome.
You have flights from Valencia to Italy....I just looked, and for now there is a Ryanair flight for about 99 euros one way..
That is much better than going by train which takes forever (18 and a half hours)...and you'd have to change trains at least twice, once in Barcelona, and another in southern France (not sure which city)
for trains check the following websites:
www.renfe.es (Spains train company)
and
www.sncf.fr (Frances train company)

look for cheap flights from Spain to Italy in the following website

If you should be buying family holiday areas then Madrid is the city and this hotelbye is the spot to start. The kids will just enjoy Madrid because there are enough amusement parks, zoos and adventures to help keep them entertained for weeks. In Madrid you may also discover a few of the popular place on the planet like: Alcalá Gate, el arena de baseball Santiago Bernabéu, la Plaza España Square and much more. Madrid also presents areas wherever you will get socked with lifestyle, areas like: Thyssen Museum or Archaeological Museum. In several phrases: Madrid is just a city that has several interesting places to show it.
