This page has details of which countries have visa exemption arrangements with Japan;

It also states how many months you can stay for! Be aware of 2 things though, ONE - it's your country of nationality that matters, not your country of residence if different. TWO - if nationals of your country are permitted to stay in Japan for 6 months, you actually have to enter Japan for 3 months first, then get permission to extend your stay afterwards.

There are a few notes at the bottom of the lists which may (or may not) apply to you!

BTW, although you don't have to apply for a visa in advance if your country's on the list, they will stamp your passport when you get here, and that constitutes a tourist visa - and you're not allowed to work or study of course..!

Assuming you are from the U.K. or U.S. or Australia, then a tourist can remain in Japan for 90 days without a visa. I am not sure about other nationalities though, but I suppose it is the same. Check with your Japanese Embassy if in doubt.

You didn't need to four years ago if you were British. They gave a 3 month visa on entry. I believe this is still in place today. Speak to the Japanese embassy in London.
