He is suffering from swim bladder disorder. What kind of food are are you feeding? Flakes or floating pellets make the fish suck in too much air and and get trapped which causes them to float. Or something about the food is causing him to get gassy and its getting stuck in him and later on in the day or night it passes and makes him swim normal again.

Try feeding him sinking pellets and see if he gets better. Peas work as a laxative so if the sinking pellets don't work you can feed them too.

I have previously owned a Black Moore that had kept floating to the surface and going upside down. It is definitely the swim bladder, and your fish has been gulping air. Fish usually do this if there is not enough oxygen in the water (you need to put some pond weed in). I also heard that putting a bit of sea salt in the water can correct the problem, but dont do this until someone can confirm this is the right thing to do!

Oh btw my fish died about a month after i saw it doing this.

swim bladder/bloated gut

clean the tank with warm water, all stones ornaments etc

add a tonic to water and tap safe or you could leave him in the bowl you use to put him in when you change the water in his tank.
add a tonic and tap safe

do not feed him for 24 hours see if he turns the water milky, if he does change the water add more tonic feed him just a little then starve him for another 24 hours repeating the process until the water remains clear keep an eye on how much he poos
they can get blocked up.

if you feel confident enough to handle him very gently in your hand over the bowl in case he struggles gentle stroke his side do not press just light tough from head to tail. put back in the water only do this once or you could have him in the net just out of the water .

in the night he's not so bloated so he able to swim up right. he'll do this until you sort the problem your over feeding do you have plastic or live plants in the tank remove live as they eat them too and this can cause problems

I've had excatly the same problem! its a disease in the fish that has occured over a period of time where when they go to eat they suck in air. The air, unlike us, gets trapped in an organ and inflates the fish like a balloon!
The shock of you tapping the tank causes the fish to respond by swimming, but this is its defense mechanisim and if you constantly tap the tank it will be on a path to a heart attack!

But don't worry! this is cureable by feeding your fish some pellets, sometimes some mashed up peas, potatoes or beans. A bit of rice never hurt either!

Hope this helps!

A fish which floats at the surface, or a fish which stays on the bottom and doesn't seem to be able to easily rise. A fish which has normal buoyancy but is listing to one side or the other often does not have swim bladder disease, but may have other diseases.

Swim bladder disorder. Perhaps dropsy if stomach is distended. Usually caused by internal bacteria or septicaemia. Either way, your fish is probably broke. Might have some sort of intestinal blockage causing gas to collect and affect balance. I had a fish do that once. Is it eating and pooing OK?

Have you tried talking to a vet? Fish swimming upside down is a sign that they are not very well.

My goldfish did that! something about him having too much air in one side of his body. Take him to the vet or you might find him floating for real! And don't feel a pratt for taking a fish to a vet, thats what they are there for!
