In Ireland they are known quite alot of names. Not too nice either. On TV they are known as the travelling community or sometimes itinerants.

Travellers or Gypos usually from Ireland but travel all throughout the UK and are DANGEROUS!!!!

But Gypsie is appropriate for them also I think.

from personal experience, they prefer to be called travellers.
