1) wear a helmut, knee and elbow pads.
2) practice!

First practice just standing on it - move your body around. You have to find your "center". Try to keep your belly button over the board no matter where your knees bend too. Try to keep your head balanced over your belly button, belly button over the board. Once you can balance then just practice moving forward and backward and with greater speed.

You may not have the blalnce for skateboarding. I can ski , ise skate and rollerblade/skate but I cannot board or surf for some reason. You will have to skateboard for a long time to get the feel for it. Hours everyday. Keep on the board and get your balance going fast and back and forth kicking off. Then learn how to stop and minor things...this isnt an easy thing to learn unless you are a natural. you cant learn tricks untill you are proficent at just riding the thing fast and stopping.

Wear a helmet, knee wrist and elbow guards, this is very important and try to stand on the thing first. Find out which foot you prefer to push with and then go slowly at first. As you practise you will get better, DO NOT rush, getting your balance and confidence is more important first. Then within a couple of weeks or so (depending on the time you spend on the board you will improve....enjoy!!!

Look, 1st get the feel for the board... figure out if you feel comfortable pushing with your left or right foot, then balance is the key... try to stand an the board first with out pushing once you feel like you are comfortable do it in motion, once you get both of those things together you can mix it up with a small push and your balance, sorry if this is hard to explain but it's a visual thing... Lots of luck to you!

ou need to figure out if you want your right foot in front or your left foot in front. If one feels more comfortable than the other, then simply go with that!

The two different ways to stand are called stances - Goofy (skating with your right foot forward) and Regular (skating with your left foot forward).

Here are three tricky ways to figure out how you will most likely feel most comfortable standing on your board:

ONE
- go get a ball or something like that, and sit it on the ground in front of you. Now kick it. Whichever foot you kicked it with will likely be your back foot. You want the balancing foot in the front, and the kicking foot in the back.

TWO
- go to a staircase, and walk up it. What foot did you use to step up the FIRST step? That's likely your back foot.

THREE
- this one's hard, because once you read it you'll know the trick. So just read this first spot and then stop when I tell you to stop. Go find someone, stand with both your feet close together, and ask them to shove you from behind. Go do this now -- STOP READING! Ok, so hopefully you didn't just fall over. You should have caught yourself with one foot. The foot you used to catch yourself is likely the foot you'd put in back.

Just like most people are right handed, most people are regular footed. That's why it's called regular. Just remember that there's no RIGHT way to do it. If all of these tricks tell you that you are regular, but you just like riding goofy, then ride goofy!

Man just do it the old fashioned way - practice everyday!
Find a nice quiet (newly tarmaced) area and just go for it!
You'll probably fall on your backside everytime you think you're just getting the hang of it - but just stick at it.

Grinding is running along a surface (like the edge of a kerb or a rail) using the centre part of the board rather than the wheels... erm...
I probably would practice staying on the board for a bit first!

Good luck and have fun!

Wear knee pads, elbow pads, and a helmut. Watch out for the private area.

Ok skateboarding is dangerous and if you want to have lots of pain when you get older due to all the broken bones and fractures then go for it. Better you than me. Just a warning for you
