There are 8 planets just in our solar system (now that Pluto has been demoted to a "dwarf planet"). A couple of hundred more have been observed around other stars and more are discovered all the time.
Yes, there has been a search for planets elsewhere in our system, meaning above/below (whatever that means) "the ecliptic" which can be thought of as near the rotational plane of our solar system. No candidates.

Well there are only 8 major planets in the Solar system now. Pluto has been demoted to a minor planet. Also I think you meant the 8 planets in the solar system, not the Universe. In the Universe there is potentially Billions of planets. Nobody knows for sure. Astronomers are constantly looking for new planets. In fact, sometime within the next few years NASA will be lauching a satalite, much like the Hubble that will specifically used for seeking out new planets. In space there really isn't a below or an above. There is only what is outside the planet Earth. Also 1,000's of miles is really not a good number to use either. 1,000's would be very small in the aspect of space. Try more like billions of miles or even trillions of miles. But, to answer your question.. Yes, there are scientists and astronomer looking for new planets everyday. In fact they have already found a couple dozen already. Take care and keep looking up.

First off all the planets are not in a perfect line. Some planets are a little higher on the solar plane and some are lower. There are objects out the in the Kuiper Belt that have crazy orbits. A solar system can have objects circling it's sun and many different kinds of ways and patterns. So what is below us is the Universe, what is above us is the Universe. We are in a solar system, which is in a galaxy, which is in the universe along with a billion million other galaxies. So see. If you go far enough in any direction your are bound to run into something.

In case you haven't heard the news there are only eight planets in the universe now. Pluto is no longer known as a planet in our universe and scientists have looked above and below the earth.

There are only 8 in the solar system now, there are actually thousands that have been discovered in the universe.
Yes scientists do look in all directions, even pluto (which used to be called a planet) is on a tilted, highly elliptical orbit which sometimes puts it many thousands of miles 'above' the plane of earth's orbit.

There are not 9 planets in the Universe, there are most likely thousands if not millions. There are 8 planets in our solar system. Scientists are able to observe stars and galaxies millions of light years away (in all directions.)

A system of 9 planets. it usually starts with more than ten, the final count will be 9. The earth is hollow, there are entry points on the north and south pole to where we can visit the inner earth, the king of the world reside in the inner city and the fountain of youth is situated inside our earth.
