Merriman is young, and stupid. At least he has an excuse. I don't think he was on steroids before this season, they tested the rookies before they came into camp last year because of the whole Castillo steriods fiasco. But when Merriman came to camp this year, there were news stories about how much better shape he was in compared to last year. When you're already an elite athlete, packing on another 15 lbs of muscle and cutting your body fat in half is an incredibly tough task, my guess is he used steroids in the offseason. Personally, I'm glad he was caught, as a fan I hate to see one of my favorite players cheat. I also think that since this happened so early in his career, he can recover from it and not have the 'roids stigma following him always.

In the long run, steroids will cause a lot of damage. This will come out when Players start falling at a young age.I had to take them for a back problem, very dangerous and misleading. They can cause many other problem, that can't be reversed.

It's ironic that I should come across this question. I just saw a show on TLC (I think it was TLC) called, The Man Whose Arms Exploded. Very interesting... and gross. I am not a body builder or anything (ha! far from it ); but, I started watching b/c the show caught my attention. Anyway one of the claims was that the start of the focus on using steriods came from contact sports because athletes wanted that extra edge to be bigger and faster.
See it for yourself: http://tinyurl.com/yet55a (caution: very gross)

You know, that's probably how he got to that level in the first place. Lots of these guys that have rare combinations of strength/speed are on the juice. In Merriman's case, he just happened to be one of the few that got caught. Longtime LB for San Francisco and Denver, Bill Romanowski, admittedly used them his entire career, and it wasn't until his last season that he tested positive.

Che Guevara. By the time Ernesto Guevara, known to us as Che, was murdered in the jungles of Bolivia in October 1967, he was already a legend to my generation, not only in Latin America but also around the world.

You say that he was already at that level, you are so convinced he just started taking them. Yet in the back of your mind you know as well as the rest of us he was likely on them all along. He is just getting caught. It hurts to think that I, I realize that, but face it IF he was at that level how much higher of a level did he think the drugs would get him to? He was likely taking them to STAY at that level after he already used them to get there.

Players should take note, that the fans do not want steroid use. I for one like raw talent, not talent that has been enhanced by drugs.

It's a competitive sport and he wanted an edge. His physical ability didn't match what his mind expected of him, so he cheated to get to the level he wanted.
