The first message was sent between two machines that were literally side by side. The only physical connection they had (aside from the floor they sat on) was through the ARPANET.

His name was Ray Tomlinson. Here's the story right from the horse's mouth:

It was about 20 years before the World Wide Web, so it was not from any Web site.

I sent my first Internet emails, from Edmonton in Canada to New York and Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1984.
