This is likely because the service is an 'up to' 8 megabits per second. If the service was running at full speed you would get 1 megabyte (which is 8 megabits), which is only 100KB more than you seem to be getting.

The two factors here are firstly that the speed test is probably telling you the speed in kiloBYTES not kiloBITS and the speed from your ISP is measure in megaBITS. The difference is a factor of 8.

At that rate of 900 kiloBYTES, that would be 7.2 megaBITS per second, which is a very good speed. You must be very near your exchange.

The second factor is that the service can be anything between 2Mbits and 8Mbits because it depends on your distance from the exchange. It's not a guaranteed speed. Most people on an 'up to' 8Mbit service get between 4Mbits and 6Mbits per second.

I hope that helps explain it. Don't be disheartened - you're getting a very good speed! More than I get.

it should work as advertised immediately. Are you sure that's not upload speed you measured?
