Friend called. No water to house. I know how to check the pressure switch contacts, and power to switch, but how can I check the wiring with an ohmmeter to see if the pump in the ground is burnt out? or the bladder inside the pressure tank? If that ruptured, would that stop the flow to the house? what should the air pressure be inside the tank. I will also check all fuses.

A ruptured tank will still allow water flow..only affects the pressure.. Also be sure to check the filter system to ensure it's not clogged. Then too, you can usually (on most pumps), trip the switch manually to see if there's an electrical problem.... (to check the electrical supply just follow the wiring in the swith plate, red and black - you should even be able to use the nuts holding the wiring to touch your probes against. Here's something most people always forget about, the sump pump located inside the well hole itself....If it's bad, no water. But this should be last in you trouble-shoot. It entails digging into the top of the well..

Has the pump been kicking on an off very quickly recently? If you change the pressure of the tank to a lower "kick-on" do you hear any clicking? If the tank was ruptured, then the pump would be running wide open - so there would be some flow to the house.

Unfortunately, if the tank did rupture and the pump was running wide open for a long period of time or it was kicking on an off frequently, the pump is probably burnt up. My parents had a leak in their tank and it ruined the pump eventually anyway.

Before you make the call that the pump is gone - try bleeding the line and resetting the pump. You should have an air valve on the water line leading into the tank. Bleed any pressure and then reset the pump switch. We had to do this frequently during dry summers if the power was interrupted to the house.

Also, the pressure inside the tank is based on the tank type and size - check the manufacturer's info (should be on the tank itself).

Good luck.
